EDITOR’S REPORT
The 2011 Trappers Workshop is in the history books and was a fine success. Over sixty beginner and experienced trappers attended two days of trapping demonstrations for mink, muskrat, raccoon, beaver, otter, fox, coyote, bobcat, snaring, fur handling and trap preparation.
Workshop students were divided into small groups of six or seven and each group spent 45 minutes at each demo station. The small groups allowed for more personal instruction and made it easy for a student to ask questions. It’s great to see new trappers so excited to get their first season started. Workshop organizer Aaron Hitchcock would like to extend thanks to all the students and volunteers, and to the ladies who kept everyone fed. Same time, same place next year! Get your reservations in early! First-time students get priority on cabins!
District representatives will soon be contacting members and scheduling meetings for their area. At a minimum, there will be two meetings in each district, one before the April directors meeting and one before the September annual convention. One goal of the district plan is to increase ATA membership. From our research, we estimate that there are 1,000 fur trappers in Arkansas that are not ATA members. Each district covers a large area and the district plan is new to everyone, so rep’s are going to need a little help notifying members and non-members of district meeting date, time and place. If you’re not sure which district you are in and who your rep is, contact an officer/director or visit the district page of the ATA website http://www.arkansastrappers.org.
The ATA Fur Sale will be held February 17, 2012 at the Pope County Fairgrounds in Russellville. Look for a mailing in late December or early January with more details and a lotting number application. ATA will be hosting the NTA Southeast Regional at the same fairgrounds in April 2012 and we’re going to need volunteers for the three day event.
Secretary/Treasurer Rocky Weeks would like to remind members with T&PC subscriptions to send in all 3 copies of the renewal form that you receive in the mail from T&PC. Rocky is still getting only one or two parts of the three-part form from some members. If you are not getting your monthly magazine please contact Rocky by e-mail or phone. If you wait until the last minute to send in a renewal there may be a lapse in your subscription.
That’s all for this month. Hey you Trapper Workshop graduates, save some fur for the rest of us!

— Mark Alexander
