VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The Trappers Convention/Rendezvous is shaping up to be a great event. It will be held on Labor Day Weekend, August 31st to September 1st, 2013, between Canon City and Cripple Creek, off County Road 11 (about 60 miles west of Colorado Springs in Fremont County).
Many new attractions have been added this year including Colorado Parks and Wildlife interactive shooting exhibits, a Trappers of the Past primitive camp and a Trappers Obstacle Course with prizes. Start getting yourself in shape and pull your adventurous side out of the closet!
Numerous demonstrations throughout Saturday include Fur Skinning and Preparation, How to Skin for Your Taxidermist, Coyote and Predator Calling, Coyote Trapping, and others. Some of the presenters include Jeff Dunnier, Tom Beaudette, Major Boddicker, and Don Clifford.
The Saturday night Barbeque Dinner is $15.00 per person. Tickets are being pre-sold if you want to order early – see my contact info below. A Live Auction will follow dinner with Cowboy Artist Jim Young providing evening entertainment.
Sunday’s events include Trapper Church with Grant Adkisson, Board and Membership Meetings followed by an all-day shooting competition and award ceremony. Deadline for registration for the shooting competitions is 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Competitions start at 12:30. The Raffle Drawing will be held at 6:00 p.m. that evening.
Exhibitors and vendors will be available so make sure you bring a list of items you need. Something new this year is that the event is sponsored by supporting companies including Sportsman’s Warehouse, Canon City True Value Trailers and Equipment, Colorado Rid-a-Critter, Big D Motorsports, Bookcliff’s Fur, Hardscrabble Taxidermy, Texas Trappers & Fur Harvesters, Pueblo Sporting Goods, and Pueblo Toyota. These sponsorships are enabling us to put on a fantastic weekend!
General admission is $5.00 per day or $10.00 for the weekend. On-site camping is available for Friday, Saturday night and Sunday night at $20.00 per space. No electricity or water are available and you must bring your own firewood. County and state fire restrictions could be in place. DOGS MUST BE LEASHED. NO ATV’S on site. Be sure to pack your trash. The property needs to be vacated by NOON on Monday, September 2nd.
Dealer space is available for $50.00 and includes a vendor space, camping space, two event passes, and two Saturday night Barbeque tickets. Dealer set up is August 29th after 3:00 p.m. and August 30th all day and August 31st before 8:00 a.m. This is somewhat more structured than previous years due to the size and interest. Your cooperation is extremely appreciated.
Both camping and dealer spaces are larger than normal size. Some of our current vendors include Bookcliff’s Fur, Big D Motorsports Artic Cat Dealer, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Canon City True Value Trailers and Equipment, Colorado Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, Traders of the Bighorn, Hardscrabble Taxidermy, A-Bar-A Leather, Critter Call, Montgomery Trap and Supply Co., Schroeder Cage Traps, Petska Fur/Marty Baxter, with others to come.
A food vendor will be available for Saturday and Sunday. Offsite camping and motels are available in the Canon City and Cripple Creek areas. Check last month’s column for a listing or go to www.coloradotrapper.com. A map is also posted on the website.
You can contact me, Dan Gates, for more information at 719-275-4077 or 719-269-7972 or email me at dan@coloradoridacritter.com. Flyers will also be available shortly. Sponsorship information, vendor applications, maps and lodging information will be sent upon request.
Be sure you tell a friend and bring someone else interested as this will be quite an event for the trapper, predator caller and fur harvester, whether a novice or an expert. — Dan Gates
