Hello to all, hope this finds everyone in good health and gearing up for the season that is quickly approaching. There has been a lot of activity going on within the association. I try to keep everyone informed but sometimes I am a little late.

I would like to thank everyone who assisted with the 2012 fur sales. They were a success. Then we had our summer convention, it was full of activities and good food. Sorry for those of you who could not make it. You missed some great demos . We will get busy setting a date and place for next year so everyone will have time to plan on attending summer 2013. We are soliciting input on a location for the convention next year. So if you have a location in mind, please contact myself or Michelle with details of area in the state. There were a lot of people who made the convention a success , most important was Jerry Strickland whose property we invaded. It is a beautiful area with a creek running through and trees to give shade. We thank you Mr and Mrs Strickland. We also need to thank Vic Smith who sprayed for mosquitoes Thursday and Friday morning. He has done this for us for the last three years at his expense. IT would have been unbearable without the spraying of mosquitoes. Then the crew who prepared 150 lbs of delicious roasted pig. The master chef was longtime friend Chuck Carpenter along with his wife and family. Chuck had a couple more helpers. It is not an easy task. We would like to thank the vendors who were on hand to fulfill trapping supplies, Montgomery Trap Supply and Dan Davis. There were also demonstrations taking place and instructed by Jeff Ashmead, Randal Stoeberl, Corry Hatch, Rick Williamson. Unfortunately John Graham was unable to attend. For the first time, the association along with IDFG, Rick Williamson and Jeff Ashmead coordinated a wolf trapping class that was held on Friday a day before the convention actually started. There were 15 participants. This was the certification class for wolf trapping.

At all ITA events there are drawings for a Dunn Knife and a set of two wolf traps. At this event, the winners were traps- Jaye Houtcooper and Kenny Pete – Dunn Knife. Congratulations to them. The tickets rollover to the next event, and you do not need to be present to win. So get your tickets from Michelle, you can order them over the phone.

I would like to let you all know that the ITA/FBU banquet will be held again at the Red Lion Downtowner in Boise on August 11, 2012. Tickets are available, adults 30.00, 13 thru 17 years 20.00, 5 thru 12 years 10.00, please contact Michelle at 208-587-5931 or email for more information. We need a head count so that we can order enough food. There will be a lot of prizes, games, auctions, etc. Last year we gave away 10 firearms at this event. If you have not attended one of these you are missing out on a lot of fun. These are very family orientated so bring your significant other and children. There is going to be a firearm that only the kids can win under 17 years old.

The ITA has started a newspaper to inform its members and the public about issues that are going on that will affect everyone that uses the outdoors. Hopefully it will also increase our membership with the trappers in the state. We are looking for stories, pictures, recipes, ads, and issues that concern you and other sportsmen and women. There is a group that is forming and plan to go door to door to stop the constitutional amendment that will be on the November ballot. We are going to have to run our own campaign to counteract them. We are going to need your help and support in this cause, as this could affect all outdoor recreationalists. The monies raised at the banquet will help to inform the non-trapping public as to the benefits that all enjoy with the sound management of Idaho’s natural resources which include but are not limited to furbearers and predatory animals. Some examples are fishermen, hunters, bird watchers, nature lovers, and pet owners. To receive a subscription to the newspaper (Longspring Gazette) you must be a member of the Idaho Trappers Association. Contact Michelle to join now. To submit content or ad rates for the paper, contact Andy White at 208-944-0774 or

Hope your summer is going well, trapping season will be here next week or at least it will seem like that. Recruit a trapping friend to join your state association and to enjoy the art of trapping. Also, don’t forget to join the National Trappers Association (NTA) at 812-277-9670 or . The NTA is active in all state issues, either financially, with advice or boots on the ground. Please support them as without them we would not be as strong at the state or national level.

A little heads up, the ITA has scheduled the 2013 fur sales, January 19 and March 9 in Mountain Home at the National Guard Armory. Please check out our website for more information. And just a reminder please consign your furs two weeks prior to sales, as it lets us inform the buyers of how much fur will be there. The more fur, the more buyers, the more money for the trappers. It is pretty simple.

Sincerely. — Patrick B. Carney
