PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Time stands still for no one! One of the Hall of Fame members died on May 13, 2010. Glenn Earp was well known through out Illinois for his fur buying, but in his earlier years was one heck of a good mink trapper as well. Glenn was born in 1911 in rural Cornell, and spent most of his life in and around that area. Glenn and his sons ran a fur buying business in Cornell for many years, plus running routes to many points of the state to buy furs from trappers and coon hunters. I’m sure many that have sold fur to Glenn were unaware of his death, therefore the reason for my placing this in the column. He is survived by a son Kenneth Earp of Cornell, a daughter Karen Ifft of Fairbury, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Our condolences go out to the family for their loss, but also the loss of a good friend.

Our annual convention will be held this year at Carlinville, Illinois at the MaCoupin County Fairgrounds on Oct. 1-2-3. For dealers booth spaces, contact Mike Gragert at 618-637-9061. Mike is also the convention chairman, so any questions can be directed to him, or if he can’t be reached call me at 309-726-1443. Mike recently informed me of the tentative demo list which consist of these people. Paul Antczak from Tennessee with a beaver demo, Ryan Ruhl of Illinois with Trap Modifications, Scott Welch of Ohio, Ron Scheller , IL. ADC and fur trapping , Mark June from Colorado, coyotes, Kyle Kaatz, IL, collection and preservation of glands, Neil Graves IL, body grips, Jeff Robinson – Ohio, canines in general, Gary Armstrong IL, coons or muskrats. This is an early list of demos, and more will be obtained before the convention.

The Richard Daniel Memorial Scholarship had two applicants this year, and from the looks of it both will probably be awarded at the convention.

The “Young Trappers Camp” is scheduled for Sept. 10-11-12 at Lotus Camp at Lake Carlyle. If you are 18 or under and need to complete a Trapper Education class to obtain your license, here’s your chance and to top it off IT’S Free. A whole weekend of camping and learning about proper trapping procedure. The first 25 will be accepted so if interested call 309-726-1443 or 618-637-9061 to get your name in.

How many of you reading this have considered wanting to be a Trapper ED instructor? If so please give me a call, because we have a grant from the Fur Bearer Fund to increase the number of certified instructors, and we need volunteers. 309-726-1443

On this general topic of volunteering, we are in need of new blood in our association. Who is willing to step up to the plate to run for our Board of Directors? Contact me before August 1, if you are considering doing so, so your name can be placed on the ballot.

On the sweepstakes for our convention fundraisers, this year we will have our old stand by MS260 Stihl, a Stevens 22/250 with 3X9 Bushnell scope, a Ruger 10-22 , plus a cash prize. You will all receive tickets prior to Sept. 1. If you have some place that you can sell tickets in addition to the one’s you get in the mail, call me for more.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

— Paul Kelley
