Hello folks! What a good time was had at our annual LTAHA convention in Woodworth on April 6th. We had a record crowd and a record number of youth in attendance. The morning started with a mink trapping demo by Johnny Price at the pond and much was learned. Next we had Steve Hardy sharing his knowledge with a coyote trapping demo. Steve is a top notch coyote trapper out of DeRidder La and was also presented with a plaque thanking him for all of his years of dedication and service to the LTAHA. Thank you Steve! Next John Lindzay and Steve Hughes had a multi species trapping demo with a question and answer period. No doubt these are two of the top trappers in the state and we appreciate the knowledge they shared with the general public. At the same time we hosted the youth trapping class and demo (30 in attendance) with Wesley Blanchard and Kirk Hammet . Wesley started the demo with a quick educational tutorial on rules, trapping equipment and bait making while Kirk demonstrated quick easy techniques on trapping Louisiana furbearers. At the end of Kirks demo, the youth were presented with traps and a book- Trapping Techniques for beginners by Hal Sullivan. A big thank you goes out to the Louisiana Fur Advisory Council for the donations of the educational material and traps. Without the Fur Councils assistance, it would have not been possible to supply the youth with these kinds of items. The kids the enjoyed the speed trap setting contest and many great prizes were awarded for the participants. Lastly before the auction we held the youth quality trap setting competition. This was our second year doing this and it was a huge success. Getting the youth involved with hands on trap setting is where it’s at! If you were one who brought a youth to this convention, thank you and bring them back next year as we are trying to have more activities geared towards them. Many auction items were donated and the money as always will be utilized to further trapping in our state. A huge thank you to all the trapping supply dealers and members who donated items and secured donations. Without your support, the convention could not be successful. Thank you to K&K animal control (Tim Ross and wife) for supporting our organization again by showing up and setting up shop. Your participation is a big part of our convention and we appreciate you. Thank you also for supporting our youth with the donations. Huge thanks go out to the kitchen crew. Buddy and Roxie Rice, Cilla and Tiffany Matlock, Pam Lee, and Carmen Cottrell did a great job taking care of the kitchen. Mr Randy’s jambalaya was a big hit with everyone. Over 120 bowls was served up for lunch. Everyone really enjoyed getting to see him cook in his old cast iron pot. I wish I had a dollar for everyone that stopped to see what smelled so good in the pot!! Big thanks to Ronnie and Teri Guy for all the behind the scenes help they provided also. Great job folks! Thank you to Rob McKay for stepping up to the secretary position last year and taking care of the association’s business. Thanks also to the folks who stayed behind and cleaned up as this is always a very important task that must be done. Thank you also to Mrs. Broxon for her hard work throughout the day as well. I hope I have not missed anyone but if I have then again I want to say thank you very much for your work and for making the convention such a success. We get very busy at the convention and we don’t always get the one on one time with folks as we would like. So if this was your first convention, thank you for coming and please come again next year. OH yeah, I almost forgot our auctioneer. Great job Tony!

Board Meeting

At the convention the election was held and Tony Howard was re-elected president, Wesley Blanchard re-elected vice president, Ryan Schafer elected secretary treasurer and Eric Cottrel elected youth education coordinator. Board of directors elected/ re-elected were Curtis Cruse, James Gallaspy, Steve Hardy and Ronny Guy. The board plans to have more meetings this year and the general membership is welcome to come sit in and give input. When dates are chosen for a meeting, that information will be forth coming. Also at our last board meeting, the board decided to place our ad in the LDWF hunting pamphlet again so look out for that. We got great response last time we did this and it’s just another way to get our name out there and let folks know who we are and what we are about. Also, I volunteered to be the new press representative and took the responsibility of getting newsletters out and association news placed in Trapper and Predator Caller Magazine. Please at any time feel free to contact me with any input for the newsletter as I want as much diversity as we can get in the information that goes out. Interesting trapping stories, information on maybe somewhere you went and gave a demo/ educational type speech or whatever. Send it in and we will get in out for all members to see. If you have any problems receiving your magazines, please contact our new secretary Ryan Schaefer . Secretary/Treasurer: Ryan S. Schaefer, 203 Natasha St., Abbeville, LA 70510. Phone 337-417-0424. Email ryansschaefer@gmail.com

The LTAHA now has a Facebook page. Please feel free to come join us and share your photos, stories, tips, upcoming events etc… Just don’t try to sell purses or shoes as Rob will quickly “unfriend” you. LOL.

Stay tuned to our LOUISIANATRAPPERS.com website and our Facebook page for any upcoming events. As of right now, other than the FTA annual trappers convention and the NTA annual trappers convention, I am unaware of any scheduled events at this time.
