PRESIDENT’S REPORT
We resumed our monthly meetings on October 16 and will continue them through April. We had 13 members in attendance. It was good seeing everyone again and catching up with each other. Marty, Tommy, and Dan reported on the last Directors’ meeting: topics included the 2012 MFT Convention, 2013 MFT Convention (August 16-17), and possible venue changes for the 2013 FBU banquet. We also discussed trying to get some photos up on the MFT website. Doug won the 50:50 and generously donated his winnings back to the District. Pat gave us his Treasurer’s report after the raffle of donated items and the 50:50 were held.
Seems many of us are still seeing a lot of mangy reds around, but as always, everyone is chomping at the bit to get started. As I type this, the wind is starting to whip up, and it looks like Hurricane Sandy is going to dump a whole lot of rain here, so looks like our season will be off to a muddy start. I’m sure we’ll get some nicer weather at some point though, and when we do, be sure to take some youngsters along on the line with you.
District 12/13 holds monthly meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, October through April, at Director Marty Campbell’s Owings, MD home. Check and see when and where your local district meets and make it to the next meeting. DISTRICT 8 REPORT
Our October meeting went well. Our elections results were Roger Ringgold – director, Donald Moore – assistant director, and Roger Ringgold – treasurer.
Roger Ringgold read his notes from the October Directors Meeting and we discussed changes in the NTA staff and the addition of the fifth issue of the NTA magazine, along with a new editor. NAFA’s private treaty sale of rats and otters were brought up. Those prices were great. General discussion was the fur prices are going to continue doing well this season. David Calloway reported getting ready to under go rotator cuff surgery and will be out of trapping for the season. Sorry – Dave. Tough luck. I have been there twice.
It was good having Anita Moore attend our meeting again. Even if she was playing hooky from school.
Andy Roberts attended to say goodbye to us. He is moving to New Hampshire. We will miss him. He promised to keep in touch.
Roger reported stopping in to visit with older trapper Sam Hendrickson who used to be very active with Dist 8. He was one of the original trappers to get the Dist 8 up and running.
220 conibears were discussed. Maryland trappers have done a good job of not abusing their use and certainly need to uphold this into the future. If ever in question, please do not set or at least change over to a foot trap.
Dist 8 has been in need of a fund raiser. We decided to all donate our first ? fur caught. We will bring them in at our December meeting. They will be sold locally for the benefit of Dist 8. Donations will be accepted from anyone wishing to donate. Bring your donation to the meeting or contact me or any other Dist 8 member to transport them to the meeting.
Coyote sightings are becoming more common. Including one less than a mile from our meeting place. None of us at the meeting have caught one yet. This year just might be a different outcome.
Miss Maryland now has her fur coat and is very happy with it. She will be showing it off at every chance.
Congratulations go out to John Leedum of North East, Md for being the first place winner in the Trappers Post Sweepstakes. He wins an expenses paid trip to Wyoming to spend 2 days on the predator line with John Graham. Way to go John.
