BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S REPORT

I wanted to thank Charlie Burbage for coming to the aid of a fellow trapper. On 12/4 while checking my traps, I was bitten on my hand severely by a animal in my trap. Being unable to skin my catch, I called Charlie, and he did not hesitate to say yes.

Not being able to skin, I pulled my traps the next day. To my surprise, I had another good day so I called Charlie again. He again did not hesitate to skin my catch.
Thanks again.

DISTRICT 8 REPORT

Bad weather seems to plague our trapper meetings. Our attendance dropped to three and two of them live there. However, we were open for business. We hope the dedication of the other trappers comes through.

We started the night with a presentation of a $50 gift certificate to Bob and Verna Calloway. They are our monthly hosts for our District 8 meetings. The certificate was for their favorite restaurant and we feel it was greatly appreciated. Bob and Verna have been hosting our meeting for quite a few years now and better hosts cannot be found.

Our meeting was short. None of us had trapped any since our previous meeting and none of us had heard any fur buy prices. We discussed the deer season and our expectations for the rest of the season.

We discussed the loss of Robert Colona, the state wildlife biologist, due to the cutting back of the Maryland Fur Bearer program. This has a large impact on Maryland Fur Trappers and MFT is looking into it on the state level.

On a personal note, I reported the bad news of tearing my rotator cuff in my left shoulder and I am scheduled for surgery for Jan. 12. Two years ago, I underwent the same surgery for my right shoulder, same time period. So, my trapping is over for the rest of the season. That makes it two out of the last three years I have had to sit on the sidelines during trapping season. The only redeeming part is the miserable fur prices and the fact that it is looking like it could be one rough winter, weather wise, for trapping.

District 8 is hoping for better support at our future meetings. Please feel free to join us.

District 8 meets the fourth Tuesday during trapping season at 7 p.m. at the home of Robert Calloway. His address is 14313 Cherry Lane and is located near Tuckahoe State Park, between Centreville and Ridgely, Md. Call Bob at 410-634-2501 for further directions.

I can be reached at 410-634-2552 or at rogerringgold@yahoo.com.

Trap on.
