PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello again fellow trappers. With fur sales winding down, I suspect there are a lot of you walking around with pretty big smiles. I think we could all agree that the hard work put forth in trapping season has paid off this year.

I was at the fur sale held at Ron Leggett’s house in March and there were plenty of trappers carrying in piles of fur to Groenewold Fur and Wool Company. It’s an event that I look forward to every year as we spend the day sharing stories from the previous year, greeting old and new friends, and watching with a bittersweet smile as our fur is loaded in bundles into the back of the truck fro another year.

As another trapping season is neatly tucked away, it makes us eager for the next one to begin. With fur sales being prosperous I suppose there may be a few more trappers in the field in the fall. I think it’s a good time to remind everyone to be respectful and mindful of landowners, other trappers, and as always, the animals in our traps.

By the time you are reading this, MFTI will have held another FBU fundraising banquet. I look forward to reporting its’ success.

We will be gearing up for our 2013 state convention on August 23-24TH in Boonsboro, MD. Details for this will be added to our website as they become available. Elections for officers will be held at the General Membership meeting on Saturday, August 24th.

We are always looking for help with the convention. If you would like to get involved, please contact one of our officers. Convention raffle tickets will also be going out. If you would like to buy or sell tickets, contact us.

Until next time, I hope all is well with you and your families.

Respectfully. — Butch Glenn

DISTRICT 8 REPORT

Our last meeting of the season was a another good one. Dist 8 donated $50 to our gracious hosts, Bob and Verna Calloway. Better hosts could not be found. Our fur donation money was put to good use. Thanks everyone.

Dist 8 was contacted by the Md DNR and will be working the Jr Hunter Day at the Sudlersville Skeet Club on June 1st. We have worked this event for quite a while. It introduces the Jr hunters to the outdoor sports available to them in Maryland. We are glad to help out for such a worthy cause.

Dist 8 will start up of meetings again in October.

We heard from Andy Roberts, who had moved to New Hampshire. He only did a little trapping this year, but plans to hit them hard next year. Dist 8 wishes him the best.

Our discussions began with muskrat trapping conditions and on to season totals, where each of us had sold or sent our furs, the selling of rat glands, castor and meats. All of us have noticed a down demand for muskrat meats during the last couple of years. All of us had at least one story to tell of things that happened to us on the trap line this year. Everyone participates and it makes the meetings go so much better.

Dates to remember for trapping events were brought up and plans made.

Time to inventory your traps and make up your list of supplies needed for next season. Our convention will have plenty of dealers to fill your wants.

Information on our convention, etc can be obtained at marylandtrapper.com

DISTRICT 12/13 REPORT

We held our March meeting on Tuesday the 19th, and 15 members attended. Topics discussed included the recent fur sales and auctions, and everybody’s high hopes for the upward price trend to continue! The upcoming FBU banquet was discussed, and Dan was collecting auction items from members. The District voted to donate a prize or two as well. After a quick break for more of Gary’s beaver BBQ, we held our 50:50 and prize raffles. New district member John won the 50:50. Jimmy plans on hosting another get together this summer, although it may be hard to top last year’s.

Well after another mild winter, we are paying for it now with a cold, wet, windy spring. It’s been running 15 degrees below normal the last couple weeks, at a time when most of us are ready for it to turn nice. Spring is surely just around the corner though, as, despite the nasty weather, I’m still hearing turkeys fire off on the roost many mornings, and things are slowly but surely starting to green up. So remember, whether you are out dunking some worms at a local pond, punching some paper at the range with a .22, or out trying to call in a longbeard this spring, please make it a point to take a kid along with you.

District 12/13 holds monthy meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, October through April, at Director Marty Campbell’s Owings, MD home. Check and see when and where your local district meets and try to make it to the next meeting. Information about District meetings, MFT events, as well as other things are available on MFT’s website, http://www.marylandtrappers.com. — Dave Sien
