PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, 2014 welcomed us with zero degree temperatures….and some snow. Here in Maryland it’s like trapping in the late 70’s. It’s been a long time since I stood on a pond and sawed the ice with a chainsaw.

We are starting up District 7 meetings again. A special thank you goes to Victor Dondero for taking the job as Director for District 7 and getting the group together.

The Stakeholders meeting with DNR is coming up in March. Public comment is welcome and encouraged. Please make sure you email, write in, or show up with your comments. Follow DNR News Release for date and time.

Mark your calendars! On Saturday, April 5th, the Maryland Fur Trappers Inc. and the Furbearers Unlimited will be holding our Annual Fur Banquet at the Calvert County Fairgrounds. You can get all the information from our website; http://www.marylandtrappers.com/events.html. Log on to order tickets in advance. There will be raffles, games, dinner, silent auction, and a live auction. It’s always a great night and a lot of fun.

Sincerely. — Dan Baker III

DISTRICT 8 REPORT

Attendance was down, but yet another good meeting.

Our local fur buyer, Wm Byler, will not be buying next year. This will leave a large void in this area. Our main discussion was about Zander’s of New Jersey who want to establish several buying points here on the Eastern Shore. We were asked to help locate one of these points. A couple places were mentioned and we will get back with Zander’s.

New trapping regulations have been established in Delaware and Donald brought us up to date with them.

The upcoming combined FTA and Pa convention in Washington County, Pa in June was discussed.

A mink was caught in a muskrat set around Easton, Md this year. They only show up rarely here on the Shore They are found on the Western Shore. None of our attending trappers have ever caught one.

Our Dist 8 fur donation brought in a total of $100 which was promptly turned over to Verna Calloway, our meeting host. What a bargain.

It was brought up that the American Hunter mag from the NRA featured a trapping article this month based on Maryland trapper Gene Garrett. Well deserved.

Foxes with mange were way down in our area this year. Two years ago I lost 20% and this year I was on fox number 86 before having to toss my first one. Then I lost another one the next day from the same farm.

Roger brought in a large well matched 8 pt deer skull he had pick up while trapping. One of the benefits of accessing the back areas.

We had a discussion of cable stakes, drivers, peat moss, etc. Everyone has a slightly different way of trapping and comparing notes with each other results in a lot of help for each other.

Of course, fur prices, fur buyers, etc also came up. It pays to keep informed and these meeting go a long way toward that.

Roger’s notes from the Directors Meeting conference call two days earlier were gone over to bring everyone up to speed on what our state association has been busy with. This includes discussion of filling a vacant Director at Large position.

Dist 8 welcomes all members and visitors. Come join us and share your trapping knowledge with us.

Dist 8 meets the fourth Tuesday during trapping season at 7:00 PM at the home of Robert Calloway. The address is 14313 Cherry Lane, near Tuckahoe State Park between Centreville, Md and Ridgely, Md. Call Bob at 410-634-2501 for further directions. — Roger Ringgold, 410-634-2552, rogerringgold@ymail.com
