MARYLAND FUR TRAPPERS HISTORIAN REPORT
We have history books for all to enjoy. They are available at our Md Conventions and at most Directors Meetings. Arrangements can be made for you to borrow any of them in case you have a project in mind. We offer one book of news letters from June 1963 to Sept 1979 written by Don Lawson, one book of Director Meeting Minutes from Oct 1961 to Aug 1971, two books of Director Meeting Minutes from 1972 to date, two books of President Reports from July 1977 to date
BIG MYSTERY: Recently while rereading the MFT annual convention booklet from 1984 I read the “History of Organized Trappers in Maryland” – a brief synopsis – by Bernie Sarafin. In there it states “It is believed that Trappers in Maryland began organizing in the mid-1940’s The first convention was held in 1947 although there is no written proof of this. There is, however, a Third Annual Convention booklet dated June 19, 1949.”
My question – does anyone have a copy of this booklet or have any knowledge of it. Bernie passed away a few years ago. This was brought up recently at our State Board of Directors meeting with no one having any knowledge of the booklet. This would be a very valuable addition to our MFT History if we can track it down. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. — Roger Ringgold
DISTRICT 8 REPORT
Our Md convention is Aug 22nd and 23rd at Fairplay, Md in Washington County. It may be over by the time you read this, maybe not. If not, come have a great time with us. Free admission and primitive camping.
I attended the Va. State convention as a tailgater in July. Plenty of dealers in the one inside building and one row of tailgaters. Most of the tailgaters and some of the inside dealers camped out on the grounds. The huge long building was on one side of us and a steep hill behind us. It put us in small valley. Just before two AM Saturday morning the circus came thru. LITERALLY. Tractor trailers roared past us for a half an hour. They backed up to the building doors in the back 2/3 of the same building the convention was in. Quite some experience.
Nothing going on at the district level. Dist 8 resumes our meeting in October. It will be an election meeting.
Now is a good time to collect dry dirt, scout land, contact land owners, pick up needed supplies postage free at out convention and fix and adjust traps and other gear. We all know there is never enough time in the fall. So get a jump on it now.
Dist 8 meets the fourth Tuesday during the trapping season at the home of Robert Calloway. His address is 14313 Cherry Lane, near Tuckahoe State Park between Centreville, Md and Ridgely, Md. Call Bob at 410-634-2501 for further directions.
