Happy New Year! I hope all of you fooled Santa as well as I did. The new trapping gear is being put to use as we speak.

I am having a great year on the trapline, catching some marten and enjoying the experiences. A note of recognition is due to Bob Howard. He showed me, and many others, a new marten set that I call the “Bob Howard Special” A simple way of setting a 110 conibear type trap. This set has produced three marten for me already this year. THANKS BOB.

The local Anti’s seem to be quiet now and we had a great court ruling in the Maine Lynx case, so thing are looking good in the short term. I am concerned about losing the wolverine to the endangered species list, which is ironic as there has been as much wolverine sign on my line as I can ever recall seeing. We are also seeing wolf, lion, bobcat and lynx sign. There were some moose earlier but they have moved out or been eaten, however I have not found any kills.

I hope all of you are having this much fun.

— Rick Hawk
