Mountain Lion Attacks Texas Boy

A mountain lion attack on a 6-year-old boy in west Texas was thwarted by the boy’s father Sunday.

Philip Caulfield detailed the attack in a story for the New York Daily News:

Rivers Hobbs was walking with his mom and dad on a sidewalk on Sunday between a restaurant and the Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend National Park when the cougar crept up on him and lunged for his head.

“It had a hold of his face… the cat was clamped on his face,” his father, Jason Hobbs, told local CBS News.

“I reached down and got my pocket knife out and stabbed the cat in the chest and it let go at that point,” the brave pop said.

The boy received two large gashes and puncture wounds to his face from the attack. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Park officials described the mountain lion as “young and in bad shape.” There were reports the same cougar tried to attack another family earlier Sunday before being chased off when someone hit it with a backpack.

Hopefully wildlife officials can track down the mountain lion and kill the dangerous animal. The Hobbs and the other family are very fortunate the attacks were not worse.

  1. The more antis screw with wildlife employees and don’t let them do their jobs and shut down hunters, this will sadly be the norm. THANKS TO ALL THE FUZZY LOVERS WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT REAL WILDLIFE. Jerry, proud to be a hunter and trapper

  2. “There were reports the same cougar tried to attack another family earlier Sunday before being chased off when someone hit it with a backpack”.

If the National Park did nothing on the first incidence then the latter attack folks (parents of the boy) should contact a lawyer as there was a history (if the reports were valid) of a problem lion. National parks seem enviro friendly when it comes to having problem animals removed.

  3. NO, I HAVEN’T HUNTED MOUNTAIN LIONS, COUGARS, ETC., BUT I HAVE BEEN TRACKED BY ONE SEVERAL YEARS AGO WHILE DEER HUNTING IN HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS. ALSO, LAST SEPTEMBER I WAS PLANTING VARIOUS NUTS ON MY 50 ACRES IN HANCOCK COUNTY WHEN I NOTICED A LARGE COUGAR APPROACHING ME. IT GOT WITHIN 50 YARDS OF ME AND WE HAD A STANDOFF. ALL THAT I HAD WITH ME WAS MY WALKING STICK AND A TILE SPADE. THANKFULLY AFTER AROUND A MINUTE IT TURNED AND WENT INTO THE WOOKS ALONG THE CREEK. IT WAS A TEDIOUS, SUSPENSFUL WALK BACK UP TO MY TRAILER AS I HAD TO WALK ALONG WHERE IT HAD GONE. I BELIEVED IT WAS JUST PASSING THROUGH, BUT ABOUT THREE MONTHS LATER I HEARD A VERY LOUD, SCREAMING NOISE THAT I THOUGHT MIGHT BE COMING FROM THE BIG CAT. I NOW CARRY MY .44MAG WITH ME.

  4. I am a trapper in Wyoming and on several occations have found lion tracks in my tracks upon returning from checking my traps. The first time I saw the tracks, I looked down at the 22 auto on my belt and it looked mighty puney. At that point, I decided to pack my 45 long colt wheel gun in my shoulder holdster as well. I have to make myself stop look and listen to my surrondings often. I get too intense on looking for sign and new trap sites and forget I’m in prime ambush settings.Several of my trapper friends have been unfortunate enough to trap a lion or two. since it is illegal to trap them in this state, they had to release them. Now THAT’S a job! according to our game and fish, lions are the no.1 problem predator in the state. I buy a lion tag fust in case I have to defend myself.

  5. With the tremendous Deer population explosion in the mid west and the south we have to expect more and more Mountain Lions showing up because the food supply is now here for their survival. We are going to have to educate folks that hiking and camping without a handgun is no longer safe.

  6. I carry a tag just in case, Was on a spring bear hunt calling in bear when I shot the big cat out of the air and pile up about five feet in front of me,

We cant use dogs to hunt the over populated cougar so just last week had to let one go “what A shame”tag and all, teaching my kids lawfull from right is tough

  7. I have seen mountain lion, black bear, and Mexican grey wolves in Big Bend back in the early 1980’s,when I lived in Texas. It is a mountain oasis for wildlife, that rises out of the Chihuahuan desert. It should have been the location for the reintroduction of the Mexican grey wolf, instead of the Arizona-New Mexico border. If it had been, we would be trapping both mountain lions and wolves in Texas by this time. The Mexican Black Bear is being re-established there by passive repatriation from Old Mexico and is protected by the Endangered Species Act.It is legal to trap mountain lions anywhere in Texas, they are not protected.

  8. I seen one near Lake Wissota 3 years ago from my tree stand…..I’m in Wisconsin….was within 30 yards of me……made for a unsettling half mile walk back to my truck after dark!
