REPORT

The NHTA directors met for a monthly meeting March 1, 2011.

There was much discussion on the banquet. Although ticket sales were down from the previous year the event went over well. Attendees were pleased with the food, atmosphere and the auction. Thank you to all of those who pitched in; sponsors, event assistants, and mostly a big thank you to NHTA president Larry Torr for his countless hours soliciting sponsors and organizing a lion’s share of the event.

The directors tossed around ideas on how the association can make improvements for next year’s banquet including slimming down costs, a new location and more help for the lead organizer. We appreciate all suggestions that any members may have.

The NHTA booth will be set up again this year at the NH Fish and Game’s “Discover Wild NH Day” to be held April 2nd at the NHF&G headquarters on Hazen Drive in Concord. There will be several volunteer directors on hand to represent the association and answer questions to the general public. Larry Torr was able to arrange for a new location for the booth this year to improve our exposure to the masses. This is a great event to educate and impress. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a dry day!

NHTA was invited to set up its display at the new “Twin State Big Game and Outdoor Show” to be held at the Lebanon, NH, high school April 2nd, 2011. Directors Jack Yazinski and Gene Dabrowski volunteered to set up and man the booth.

The NHTA Spring Meeting will be held April 24th at the Belknap County Sportsman’s Club in Gilford located on Lilly Pond Road. The doors will open at 7 am. There will be beans and hot dogs at noon and then a quick business meeting to follow. The Spring Meet usually wraps up by early afternoon. We are in need of volunteers to put on demonstrations; contact Larry Torr at 603-742-7551 if you would like to participate.

Dwight Pennell presented the NHTA with a donation in the form of a check for $891 from the savings account of the former Carroll County Trappers Association. The CCTA has not been active for many years and has now been officially laid to rest.

Dwight Pennell has taken the lead in organizing a weekend for mid-May for volunteers to head back up to the Barry Conservation Camp in Berlin, NH, to continue renovating cabins to be used by young campers this coming summer. The camp was closed last season due to declining conditions of the facility.

Sportsmen’s groups have rallied behind an effort by NHF&G Commissioners to breath life back into the summer camp to keep the tradition of offering children an opportunity to experience the real outdoors. NHTA will finalize plans and choose a weekend at April’s director’s meeting. Plans are to work a Saturday to, among other repairs, install new windows and a door on the one cabin supported by NHTA and offer to assist other cabin reclamation projects that may be under way and stay over night to finish up Sunday. Dwight Pennell can be contacted at 603-539-7954. The association is proud to be apart of this effort and has committed $2,500 in resources and ninety-plus volunteer hours to date.

The association voted to send donations to affiliates for their fund-raising functions. The Vermont Trappers Association was sent a coon hat and fur earmuffs and the NH Wildlife Federation will be sent a coyote pelt and a coon hat.

Director Art Whipple informed NHTA that Director Raymond Russell of Fitzwilliam has passed. Art will write a short memoir about his long time friend for the association to include in next month’s news.

Directors were reminded that April 2011 would mark the 102nd birthday for our old trapper friend Harry Thompson of Tamworth. Happy Birthday Mr. Thompson.

Best to all.

— Paul DeBow, Grafton County Director
