REPORT

The New Hampshire Trappers Association held its annual Spring Meet at the Belknap County Sportsmen’s Club in Gilford, NH April 22nd, 2012. Bailey’s Trapping Supplies was set up to sell supplies/gear. Thank you Bill for taking the day to offer goods to NH trappers.

NHTA Membership Director Roger Burnham demonstrated the skinning of a beaver and the extraction of the castor gland. NHTA President Larry Torr demonstrated the fleshing and stretching of the beaver. Merrimack County Director Jim Hawkins demonstrated the setting of a fisher trap on a pole. Thank you gentlemen.

There was a “beans and hot dogs” meal with a few potato salads and the like in the mix. Thank you to all the directors that provided a crock-pot item. Thank you – mostly to Belknap County Director Brian Denutte for set up and clean up of the meal.

The Spring Meet concluded with a Director’s Meeting. This meeting also served as the monthly meeting for the first Tuesday in May. NHF&G liaison Fred Shepard updated the group on a few items at NH Fish and Game. He attended a

NH House/Senate hearing this month and testified on behalf of NHTA supporting NHF&G’s opposition to a bill that would allow sportsmen to carry larger firearms while in the woods after sunset. The bill was defeated.

He also briefed us on a NHF&G Commissioner’s meeting where they voted in favor of adding rules that will limit the use of certain traps in the northern part of the state. Since a lynx was caught on video along with a few kits in northern NH, NHF&G has wanted to be proactive in instituting rules that will limit types of traps and certain sets that may accidentally trap and/or kill lynx. Lynx are on the federal and state endangered species list.

Rockingham County Director Steve Schlangen has tickets for the ten-gun fall raffle printed and ready for distribution to directors. Contact a director if you would like some to buy or sell. Steve can be reached at: 603-895-0686.

Membership Director Roger Burnham announced that there are now some options on the renewal form that comes in the mail for the Trapper & Predator Caller. The form will now allow for the selection of one, two or three year memberships.

NHTA President Larry Torr, speaking in place of the vacant NTA director, mentioned a few national incidents where trappers or sportsmen have posted pictures of dead animals on line and later found those images being used by animal rights activists to support their cause. Be careful while on line posting pictures and commenting on posts that may offend those that are not accustomed to seeing animals in the same light that we view them.

NH F&G Hunter/Trapper Education Coordinator Tom Flynn attended the meeting and spoke on a few topics. He is interested in recruiting a few, or several, new trapper education instructors. He is down to a precious few that carry the load statewide. If you are interested in becoming an instructor, please contact Tom at the NHF&G Owl Brook Facility: 603-536-3954.

The association was present with the trapper’s cabin at the annual “Discover Wild NH Day” at the NH Fish and Game headquarters in Concord April 21st, 2012. This event is free to the public and drew hundreds of outdoors-orientated individuals: great exposure for NHTA. Thank you to the officers and directors who took this day to interact with the public on behalf of the NHTA.

Best to all. — Paul DeBow, Grafton County Director

  1. Ho Folks……Just to let you know…I’m finding beaver and Coyote carcusses in the fields and in the Sugar River in Croydon NH. This is not good publicity for trappers. Thanks, G Lynch
