VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Wow, September was a crazy month. We had 48 people take the trapper training course. And on Saturday of that weekend, we had to have people at the Pequest Hatchery for the open house. Luckily, there were several people who stepped in to help. Somehow things still got done, without too many mistakes. The people taking the course had a good catch — two opossums, two woodchucks, one red fox and several muskrats. We released the red fox and one of the opossums. Boy, the girl who caught that opossum that got turned loose was insulted. It was her first opossum. That was the first time I ever saw anyone get upset over a ’possum. I am sure she will catch lots more in her life.

From what I was told, the open house was well attended. The guys sold quite a bit of tanned fur.

Then this Sunday was our Convention. It seemed like the attendance was down a little, but the raffles and dinner still sold well. Ed Markowski of the NJ Outdoor Alliance spoke about the upcoming election and why it is important for all of us to vote. Then Andy Burrnett spoke on several furbearer studies and related subjects. Next up was John Eppler with the fur report. It was not too encouraging. Then came the officer’s reports and elections. Due to health reasons, Connie Henderson wants to step down. So we are looking for someone to take the secretary’s job. Any volunteers?

That is enough for this month. Remember, be safe and take a kid with you.

— Jim DeStephano
