SECRETARY’S REPORT

I hope everyone had a good trapping season this past season. By the time you read this, the only season that will be open will be the beaver and otter season. My season went pretty well this year. Meaning I was able to get out there and set some steel in the ground or in the swamp. I am still out there plodding through the snow just about every day with my dog. I use him to break trail for me.

We just had our annual trapper’s dinner and it was a great success. We had a great meal with lots of B.S. to go with it. Conservation Officer Thayer from the Michigan DNR was the guest speaker. His talk turned into a question and answer session. He was very informative in his answers to those who asked questions that pertained to the game laws. We had some great door prizes and some great raffle prizes that were donated by our members and local stores. I would like to thank the following people and businesses for their donations of prizes that were given away during the dinner. I hope I don’t omit anyone, but if I do thank you. These are the names of people and businesses that donated: Williams Trap Co., Pines Fur Co., Larry Finch, Ace Hardware, M.W. Spencer, Holiday gas station, Mark A. Spencer, Wildwood Pasties, Glen’s Market, St. Ignace Barber Shop, The Feed Station, Griffin Beverage, Gustafson’s Smoked Fish, Kings, Mackinac Sales, Gary Revord, Jim Neitling, Rich Stowe, Larry Pratt, Jay’s, Ken Mills, Dwayne and Jerry Ulman, Paul Warner, Steve Grondin and Jim Garant’s Party Store. Thank you again for helping make this dinner a success.

Our next meeting will be on the 17th of March in Rudyard at the Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m. We are also having a public relations booth at the Traverse City Hunting and Fishing Expo on March 19 to the 21st. If you stop and want to relieve one of the volunteers who are working in the booth so they can have a break, just let them know and I am sure they will be grateful for the break.

I was just looking at two different Farmer’s Almanacs for the month of March. I noticed something very interesting, neither one agreed on what type of weather we are going to have. One said that it was going to be dry with below normal temperatures and the other said there will be rain storms and above normal temperatures. I guess you can take your pick because it sounds like that is just what they are doing — guessing.

There really isn’t much going on, but I would just like to keep in touch with you guys and gals out there.

— Jim Neitling
