SECRETARY’S REPORT

As I sit here writing this letter, I am trying to look out the front window of the house. I say try because the snow is piled up so high that it covers over half of the window. This winter is like the winters that we used to have. Snow deeper than an elephants eye and colder than a well digger in the Klondike.

I have heard that some of the fur prices are unbelievable, especially the muskrats. One young lad that I was talking to received a top of $20 for his rats. This was his first year of doing up his own fur. He said that it sure makes a difference of doing up your fur rather than just trapping them and throwing the critter on the buyers floor. He said it gave him a sense of pride in what he has done.

The wolf issue is going to be a battle to the bitter end. The antis are trying to get enough signatures to put the hunting proposal on the ballot and they also are suing the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior. Imagine what could accomplished if all the money that is being spent on Ballot proposals and lawsuits were used to help the humans in this country.

The trapper’s dinner was a great success. We enjoyed a good meal and the chance to see people that we have not seen in awhile. There were some great door prizes given away and I think everyone that was at the dinner went home with a door prize. We had a question and answer session with DNR, Adam Bump. There were a lot of questions asked of Adam during this period. We also had a guest speaker, Fabian Lavigne, who talked about the Sportsman Expo that is being held at the Cheboygan County fairgrounds in May from the 17th to the 19th. Sounds like there is going to be quite a lot of exhibitors at this show. We are planning to have a booth there and we are looking for volunteers to man the booth for short periods of time throughout the weekend.

We have 2 new lifetime members in our association. Dave Spencer and Richard Pershinske. We would like to thank you for your confidence in our organization.

The next meeting will be on the 20th of March at the Lutheran Church in Rudyard and on May 15th at the Northland Sportsman Club in Gaylord. Both meetings will begin at 7:30pm.

Hope to see some of you at one of the meetings. — Jim Neitling
