Summer is here and the year is half over. The fires north of Newberry and in the Seney Refuge are finally out. They sure caused a lot of damage to private property. The weather sure has been erratic. Hotter than blazes with no rain then it cools down and we get a deluge.
I have an update on the critter control licenses. Mark Spencer has been in contact with the DNR about this issue and also with some of the politicians. The changes so far are that there will be no liability insurance required, the test/course will be $125 and if you lapse on the renewal of your permit you will not have to retake the test. If there are any more changes down the road, I will let you know.
We had a meeting on the 15th of May in Gaylord. We had a pretty good turnout. Mark Spencer gave a fur report and things seem to be looking up for next season as far as prices go. The Chinese have learned how to shear the bigger beaver and are showing a real big interest in the beaver. Turkey is now showing an interest in the fur garment industry. There could be a good interest in the fur industry for the next 3 years.
Mark talked on the trapper education course. There will be a class at the U.P. Trappers convention in July. In August, there will be a class at the Michigan Trapper’s Convention. There will also be one in September at the Brimley State Park. If you are interested you can contact your organization for dates and times.
We had our first Adopt-A-highway pickup and we had a good turn out. In fact there were some new faces there instead of us old farts. The next one will be Tue. July 17. We meet at 6:30 pm at the gas station at Kinross exit. We also have our last pickup on Wed. Sept. 13, just before the convention. Same time, same place.
Ken Mills put on a demo at the Young Authors of Rudyard. He said that there were about 80 kids who showed an interest.
As of January 27th of this year we are allowed to bring wolf hides into Michigan for commercial use provided you have the correct paper work. We took a vote on the purchasing of a wolf for our fur kit and it passed.
Mark got a nutria and he is getting it tanned so that we can put it in our fur kit also.
Our convention is still a go. The dates are September 14th to the 15th at the fair grounds in Kinross. If you are interested in a booth for your wares inside the building you can contact Ken Mills. He will tell you what is available and what the cost will be. If you just want to set up outside and tailgate all you have to do is show up, Ken will also collect for that. There is plenty of space for camping, full hook-up or primitive. The township takes care of that portion of the convention. If you want to do a demo of any kind, contact Lloyd White to let him know what you would be interested in doing. I am not sure if we are going to have our annual fish fry this year due to circumstances that have occurred over the winter.
There will be an election of officers and directors. The positions available are president, secretary and 2 directors. We are looking for new people to take over some of the positions especially the president and secretary. We need some young blood in the leadership positions of the organization. Speaking for my self I think it is about time some one younger with a different outlook on things take over the helm of my position as secretary. If you are interested in any of the positions you can contact one of the officers and submit your name for the position you want to run for.
The next meeting will be Wed. July 18 at the Lutheran church in Rudyard. 7:30 pm. Then there will be our annual membership meeting at the convention on Friday night at 7:30 pm in the 4H building.
I hope you have good and safe summer. — Jim Neitling
