SECRETARY’S REPORT

Well, here it is the middle of another year and as of now there is not much going on. The only thing I know is that we are getting plenty of rain so far this year. There is water where there has never been water before and some of the creeks and rivers are still up as if it was winter run off.

There is another thing that I know for sure is that there may or may not be a wolf season this year. Sounds like the antis are going to be allowed to have there anti wolf season proposal put on the 2014 ballot. If they are, it will put stop to the wolf season for this year. This is today but it may change by tomorrow. In all my years, I have never seen nor heard of anything as ridiculous as to what is going on with the wolf season.

We had a great meeting in May at Gaylord. It was a relaxed atmosphere because we sat outside on the deck of the sportsman club. It was really great to just sit outside and be totally relaxed.

During the meeting Mark Spencer told of the cost and dates of the wolf season. This sounds like a mute point now but I will tell you what is being proposed. There will be 1200 licenses sold over the counter at a cost of $100 for residents and $500 for non-residents. First come first served. They will go on sale August 3rd. The season will be from November 15th to December 31st. There will be 3 management units and you will be required to call in immediately upon shooting a wolf and you will have to call every morning to see if the quota has been met. You will have 72 hours to have it tagged at a DNR station. These are the rules as of now but who knows.

We’ve already been planning our convention. For dealer booths, you should contact Ken Mills 906/478-6631. The booth prices will be $30.00 for the first 10’ space and $10.00 for each additional space. Tailgating will again be $10.00. Contact Lloyd White 906/632-6071 if you would be willing to do a demo. The convention will be Sept.20-21 in Kinross at the fairgrounds. The positions up for election this year are Vice President, Treasurer, 1 lower peninsula director and 1 upper peninsula director. If anyone is interested in running for one of the positions contact one of the officers with your name and what you are interested in. We need new blood in the organization and with new blood sometimes comes new ideas. I know for sure that come next year, I will not be running for the secretary’s position and sounds like some of the other officers are not going to run either. This is serious guys. Without officers you have no organization. This will be your decision as to whether we go on or fold up.

As a reminder to the members who are going to college for some sort of wildlife or conservation courses. We have a scholarship that is available to those who qualify. If you are interested you can contact me for an application. We only give out one or two a year so get your application in early.

There will be an Indian biologist at the convention to talk on their study of the fisher and pine marten.

The next meeting will be July 17th at 7:30 pm at the Lutheran church in Rudyard.

I hope everyone will have great and safe summer. Hope to see some of you at the upcoming conventions. — Jim
