SECRETARY’S REPORT
I guess it is time to put away all the trapping gear until next season. This past season has been a pretty good one, especially with some of the fur prices. This past spring was something else. As one trapper said the other night, who would have ever guessed that we would be out in 60 degree weather in the spring trapping beaver.

Mark Spencer the Younger taught a trapper’s education on the 27th of February along with Mike Stowe and Mike Anderson. They had 21 in attendance. They are trying to get a course set up in the Sault for May or June.

The following is a list of the Trapper Education Coordinators; Western and Eastern U.P. – Mark Spencer, 906-292-4779; Northwestern and Northeastern L.P. – Chuck Turk, 231-898-2685; Saginaw Bay and Southeastern – John Caretti, 313-304-3026; South Central – Chris Kettler, 616-822-2444, and Southwestern – Kahler Schuemann, 269-598-2034. If you are interested or know someone who is interested in trapper’s ed. those are the contact people for setting up the courses.

If you would like to find a class in your area and can get on the internet you can go to the DNRE website Michigan.gov/DNRE, and fine the outdoor recreation, hunting and trapping, Michigan trapper ed. They will ask for your area and you will get whatever info you need.
The dates for Adopt-A-Highway are April 28th, July 14th and Sept. 15th. We will meet at the intersection of M80 and I75 at 6:30p.m. for these pickups.

If you would like a NGLFH jacket, we are starting a new list to order one. Give Jim a call and we will put your name down and try to get the jackets by convention time.

We have another lifetime member and he is Jack Otteson. Jack thanks you for your support and confidence. We had our Adopt-A-Highway pickup on the 28th of April and 11 members showed up. Thanks guys for donating your time to pick up other peoples trash.

Gene Harrison just got back from wintering in Texas and he said that he caught enough fish to put on another trapper’s fish fry at the convention. He and his wife Vera sure know how to put on a feed. The United Trapper’s Council has decided that the following issues will be brought up at the next DNR meeting.

To allow the snaring of mink and rats, to extend that cat season in the lower, to allow a bag limit of 2 otter in zone C and extend the pine marten and fisher season and increase the bag limit to 2 fisher and 2 pine marten.

Not much more info in this report. Hope to see some of you at one of the conventions this summer. — Jim Neitling
