SECRETARY’S REPORT

I think that Spring is finally here. The snow seems to be leaving at a pretty good rate and is making it possible to get back in the bush to start hauling firewood.

You mushroom hunters out there might be able to get some of those wonderful morels this year with the moisture and warmth finally getting here.

Sounds like the antis have gotten enough signatures to have the wolf season put on the ballot but it sounds as if our Legislature is going to try and stop their efforts with some Bills that would prohibit anything like this from occurring again.

We had our meeting in March at the Lutheran Church in Rudyard. We had a good turn out and there were a few youngsters there. It is good to see them at these functions.

Mark Spencer attended a DNR meeting and gave a report on what took place. For the taking of bobcat, there is talk of expanding areas C&D and establishing 2 more areas on the west side of the state. In the new areas the seasons will be split 50-50. When the trapping season ends the dog hunting starts. They are talking of reducing the time of sealing at the end of the season from 5 days to 3 days. They are trying to get biologists to the auctions to seal pelts. There is going to be no changes in the rat season. There could be bobcat hunting at night if the cat population can support it. The using of #3 and #4 buckshot is not going to happen. Coyote hunting with dogs at night will be allowed. The use of dogs for damage control on raccoons at night will be allowed but the Conservation Order will spell out the meaning of the term Damage. Mark said that there was a short discussion on marten and fisher.

The Northern Michigan Expo will be at the Cheboygan fairgrounds in May. The dates are from the 17th to the 19th of May. We will have a booth there for public relations. That is also the date for the Mid Michigan Trappers convention in Evart.

We’ve already been planning our convention. For dealer booths, you should contact Ken Mills 906/478-6631. The booth prices will be $30.00 for the first 10’ space and $10.00 for each additional space. Tailgating will again be $10.00. Contact Lloyd White 906/632-6071 if you would be willing to do a demo. The convention will be Sept.20-21 in Kinross at the fairgrounds.

We have a new lifetime member, Bob Moody. Thanks for your confidence and support.

The next meeting will be May 15th in Gaylord at 7:30pm at the Northland Sportsman Club. See you there.

I hope everyone is going to have a great Spring and then a great Summer. I hope to see some of you guys this some at one or two of the conventions and especially at ours. — Jim
