PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Here it is the first of October and the beginning of the season is right around the corner. As per usual, I am not ready for the trapping season. One year, I will be all set in plenty of time before the season begins. I can not believe that the year has slipped by like it has.
We had our convention in September and it was a great one. Everyone including me thought that the attendance would be way down from the reports of other conventions. We were sure surprised at the attendance numbers. It sounds as if everyone had a great time while they were at the convention. I know that I enjoyed myself. I got to see some folks that I have not seen since last year and got to tell some new lies.
Gene and Vera Harrison once again out did themselves in putting on their fish fry on Thursday night. The fish was fantastic and we also had live entertainment while we ate. Gene played and sang for us. It was a great time for all who attended.
We had our annual meeting on Friday night and it was well attended. We had an election of officers and as per usual everyone ran unopposed and were unanimously re-elected. The vice-president and treasurer remain the same as always. The 2 directors are Rick Marshall and Larry Pratt. I firmly believe that we need some new blood and this includes me. I sure wish some one else would run for some of these positions because some of us are getting older and worn out. I am speaking for myself on the worn out part. We had our last Adopt A Highway pickup for the year on Wed night before the convention. We had 8 people and picked up around 8 bags of trash. Thanks to everyone who helped out during the year. The sweatshirts are in. They are very nice, heavy, with a hood and front pocket.

They are $35.00 each. We have sizes from Med to XXXLarge. Contact Mark at 906/292-4779. We will be having the annual Trappers Dinner again in 2012. Sometime in February. There’ll be more on this later. There was a trapper’s education class put on at the Brimely State Park. A new instructor, Dan Johnson, helped Mark Spencer and Mike Anderson with the class. Dan said it sure was a long day especially standing on the concrete floor all day. Dan also said it was a great learning experience for him.

Thanks Dan, Mark, and Mike for volunteering your time to teach the youth the correct way to trap. If anyone is interested in becoming an instructor or attending a trapper ed course, please contact Mark or Mike Anderson. There is also info about this on the DNR website. We also had an awards presentation during the meeting. Mark “the older” Spencer was presented with the Trapper of the Year and Rick Marshall received the President’s Award.

Congratulations to you guys for your well earned awards. Some members expressed concern over the DNR rule to turn in the heads of otter when you get them tagged. Some like to turn their otter over for taxidermy. Mark Spencer (Jr.) said he will be meeting with the DNR and will bring up the concerns.
Here is the list of meeting dates for the next year. October 20th ,2011 in Rudyard, January 18th , 2012 in Gaylord, March 21st , 2012 in Rudyard, May 16th, 2012 in Gaylord, July 18th, 2012 in Rudyard, September 14th at the fair grounds in Kinross, and October 17th, 2012 in Rudyard. The July meeting that has been in Gaylord will be in Rudyard and the Gaylord meeting will be on the 16th of May. So mark your calendars. The time of the meetings will be at 7:30pm and is always on a Wednesday. The Rudyard meeting is at the Lutheran Church and the Gaylord meeting is at the Northland Sportsman Club.
