In just a few weeks our favorite time of the year will be here. It does not seem possible that the season has arrived already. The rain has been relentless lately so there should be lots of water but that does not mean lots of critters.

To those who hunt on CFR lands and want to trap on this same land can do so now with the new ruling from the Attorney General’s office. You will now be able to set traps with out fear of being ticketed. I know some of you have had the exclusive right to this property for years but now you will have some competition. I know, life is not fair.

The legislature has passed the Wildlife Bill and it will go into law next March. This does not mean that there will be a wolf season this year. The antis are going to leave their proposal on the ballot so when you vote be careful on how you vote. If their proposal passes it will cancel this years hunt, and give them ammunition for a court case. This is the only thing that I have to report on that will change any of the upcoming trapping rules.

As most of you know by now, I am retiring from the secretary position and this will be my last report to the Trapper and Predator Caller Magazine. I look back on all the reports that I have written over the years and it amazing at how many I have written over the years. I also look back at all the people that I have met while being secretary. I sure hope to keep these friendships long after I have retired. I will stay active in the organization and help where I can. I know the next person will do a better job than I have done because their will be new blood and new ideas instead of the old ones that I have had. I hope to see everyone at future events and maybe on the trapping trail.

Speaking of events, by the time you read this we will have had our convention and I sure hope it is a successful as the ones in the past have been. I will not get the chance to thank everyone for all their help at this convention and for all the help at the past ones and any events that we have held. Thanks again for putting up with me all these years. I would also like to thank my wife Penny for all the help she has been to me so that I could do my job. If it was not for her, I would have never written a letter that you could understand. She was my personal editor. Thanks! — Jim Neitling
