PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Spring came late in the Eastern U.P. Beaver season was over April 12, except on trout streams until the end of April. Most beaver ponds were froze over. Then season was over. Beaver were down so more seed for next year.

Our meeting with the DNR was pretty much useless as usual. They are recommending our season be shortened on bobcat to two months, Dec.1 to Feb. 1 and dog hunters Jan. 1 to March 1. Get your traps out the first of December. On bodygrippers, check your rules before setting — “not good.” On snaring beaver, you have to have a stop on your snares. Good luck! Check your rules again. Colony trap size may be 8”x8”x36” for rats, if you can find any rats. The DNR is recommending these rule changes to the NRC. NOT GOOD for bodygrippers, snares and bobcat season.

On the good side, our booth at the Traverse City sport show was well attended with a lots of interest and good PR.

My annual presentation with the second grade students as part of Young Authors Day at Rudyard Schools was well attended with three classes of 24 students each. The students are always excited and interested, talking, asking questions and looking at two tables of tanned furs and mounts.

Talking about the good points and bad points of the animals and wetlands are the main topics.

Our association provided packets of cards about the animals and coloring books to each of the students.

Our 2009 convention will be set up on Sept. 17, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sept. 18, 7 a.m. until 9 a.m., show starting 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on the 19th, 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.; tear down Sunday the 20th, 8 a.m. until ??? For booths, call me at 906-478-6631; Demos call Lloyd White 906-632-6071; other information call any officer or director.

Get your traps ready for this fall. Hope demand and prices for fur are better. Just getting in the woods is half of it!

— Ken Mills
