PRESIDENT’S REPORT

We are going in to 2009 with a lot of snow and water. Hopefully it will help our trapping conditions. 2008 started out well with better water conditions than the last few years. Fur prices were better at the start.

Our convention in September was one of our best. A big thank you to NAFA, Fur Harvesters, the supply dealers and trappers who donated trapping supplies for the forty buckets we gave to kids at our trapping demo at the lake, which gets better each year. Our 2009 convention will be on the 18th and 19th of September with set up on the 17th and tear down on Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

On a sad note, we recently lost two more trappers and friends, Jack Paquet and John Szymanski. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.

Cory Carter had to resign as our secretary due to a job change at work. He did a great job and will be missed. Tammy Schultz has agreed to take over the duties as secretary, at least until the convention in September. We appreciate Tammy taking this responsibility.

Our fur prices are not too stable with the world economy as it is. At the most recent Fur Harvesters auction, 70 percent on Eastern beaver and 70 percent of better rats sold; NAFA sold beaver at selective demand and 100 percent of rats at good demand. Who knows!

We had our annual trappers’ dinner with 47 showing up on a storming night. We had a lot of door prizes and a raffle. Our program included speakers, Mark Downey, C.E.O. from Fur Harvesters Auction and Don Rumford, Vice-President of F.H.A.H. A good time was had by all.

Our last meeting on Jan. 21, 2009, was held in Gaylord with a good turnout. Our next meeting will be on March 18, in the basement of St. James Lutheran Church in Rudyard at 7:30 p.m.

We will have a booth at the Traverse City Sports Show on March 20, 21 and 22. Stop in and check it out!
Good spring beaver trapping! Hope we have a good breakup.

— Ken Mills
