PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello everyone. I hope you all enjoyed your summer. By the time you read this, trapping season will already be underway. I hope the beginning of the season has been going well so far and that everyone has had plenty of tight chains. I want to thank everyone who attended our fall clinic this year at the Maumee Valley Sportsman’s club. A big special thanks to the vendors, cooks, and trappers that put on the various demos. It is always great to get together and talk with fellow trappers. I hope you all had a good time and maybe even learned a couple new tricks or trapping techniques. I know I sure did. For those who were unable to attend, a couple of questions were brought up during our business meeting regarding last years and this year’s fur auction.

Last year’s fur auction was held in early January and many trappers felt that their fur sold for less than what they were anticipating. Unfortunately, last year’s sale was held when the fur market was at its lowest point of the year and before the fur prices were well established. As a result of this, we have decided to have this year’s auction in the later part of January.

We feel that holding the auction at a later date will greatly benefit all sellers because the fur prices will be well established by that time. Many trappers will also be finished trapping for the year and will have the opportunity to sell all of their fur at one auction. Questions were also brought up during the business meeting regarding the number of buyers present at last year’s sale. In years past, we have sent out letters to various buyers inviting them to attend our annual fur auction and have usually had a successful turnout. I can assure you for this year’s auction, the officers of NWOFT will actively pursue buyers in order to have as many buyers present as possible for our January sale. The main purpose for NWOFT is to provide a successful auction for its members and other area trappers, and we feel these changes will help with that success.

This year’s fur auction will be held on Saturday, January 28 at the American Legion in Tontogany, OH. The auction will begin at 9:00am with grading beginning at 8:00am. I wish you all the best of luck this trapping season and encourage you to continue promoting trapping in Northwest Ohio. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions. I look forward to seeing you in January. Until next time…Take Care, God Bless and Happy Trapping!

— Michael R. Perkins
