PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This year’s convention was another success. It was good to see everyone there, and of course we got to see Newt sky dive again. I would like to think everyone who volunteered. The demos were great, the food was great. Special thanks to Bryan and Nikki Lacy, and Chance Caylor for the great job they did with the kids. Also to Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Frank for bringing back the frying pan toss. That was fun to watch. Bud Jenkins threw for the shortest distance out of all the contestants. We are currently looking for next year’s convention location. We will announce the location A.S.A.P. Also thanks to all the vendors for coming out and all the donations you guys gave.

District 4, Billy Price’s term expired Aug. 31 and no one has stepped up to fill his position. District 4 has many qualified guys to lead that district. If anyone would like to volunteer let me know please. Special thanks to Billy Price for his time. He was a very active director that worked very hard for his district. Billy held regular meetings and worked many VTA events. Thank you for your service, you did a spectacular job. Districts 2 and 9 are still vacant so anyone in these districts we need your help.

VDGIF reg. cycle is coming up soon so contact your director or any board member for suggestions.

I would also like to apologize for not getting a report in the TPC last month. I will do my best not to let that happen again. Call anytime please. 434-996-6067. — Steve Colvin

NTA DIRECTOR’S REPORT

I represented the VTA at the NTA Directors meeting held on July 31 and August 1, 2012 in Owatonna, MN. The meeting was very informative regarding a wide range of issues that the NTA is involved in.

Considerable time has been spent responding to requests from various production companies wanting to involve the NTA and individual trappers in trapping related TV reality shows. In general, it has been determined that these proposals will not be in the best interest of our industry. Their objective is focused more toward displaying unrealistic characters with little coverage of the history of the fur trade and our contribution to responsible wildlife management.

NTA membership is relatively stable at around 8400. Hopefully, with the improved fur prices we can get back above 10000.

Gary Leistico, our Legal Counsel has been involved in issues related to restrictive trapping regulations and misuse of the ESA by preservationist groups in their attempts to circumvent prudent wildlife management by State and Federal resource management agencies. This included restrictions on the use of body-gripping traps in Minnesota, threatened litigation to prohibit snares in Idaho related to take of Canada Lynx, threatened litigation to challenge the resumption of trapping in New Mexico within the range of the Experimental Population of the Mexican Gray Wolf, and assisting in the development of an Incidental Take Permit by the State of Maine and the USFWS for Canada Lynx.

Conservation Director Jim Curran and DNIA Dave and Karen Linkhart spent considerable time addressing our issues in cooperation with State and Federal entities.

Richard Faler, has been awarded a contract to assume the job of Editor of the American Trapper.

Gary Meis, past President of the Minnesota Trappers Association was inducted into the NTA Hall of Fame. Semper Fi, Gary.

The Convention activities at the Steele County Fairgrounds began on Thursday August 2 and a magnificent show it was. Over 5500 attendees paid at the gate and more than 300 vendors were set up displaying all manner of trapper needs. The Minnesota Trappers volunteers did an absolutely outstanding job of managing the event. — Larry Kline

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

Hello VTA members, hope everyone has had a good summer. Billy Price, our District 4 director, had the last of three District 4 meetings in august. We still do not have a District 4 director. If anyone is interested in being the new director for District 4, please contact Steve Colvin or Billy Price. Our VTA membership is now 503 as of the end of August. Before the convention, I sent all our lifetime members new VTA membership cards. I had several come back by mail. I was able to solve some of the ones with new addresses and resend, but I still have two that I cannot solve. One is Chris Stewart with old address of Bluemont, VA and the other is James Beers with old address of Centerville, VA. If anyone of you know either of these life members, could you please ask them to contact me so that I can get their new address and send them the new card. If anyone has any problems or concerns with their membership or issues from the T&PC, please contact me and I will be happy to help you. Also, if you know of anyone who does not receive our VTA newsletter, let me know. I had one VTA member who sent me her renewal from T&PC, but had not received the newsletter, because for some reason she was not on the membership list. Thanks. — Diana Craig
