PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Wow, what a convention, if you didn’t make it to this one you really missed out. Thanks to everyone who helped. The Kids Corner by Mike Brookover, Bryan Lacey, Bill Coffee, and Chance was outstanding, you guys did a heck of a job. Art Foltz, Frances Richards, Tim Tate, Ed and Charlene Crebbs, Peggy Brian, Robert and Jonathan Graham, Dickie and Diane Craig, Todd Cocker, Billy Price, John Coakly, and Winston Marshall and his wife did an outstanding job. I know I have probably missed someone, if I did, I apologize.

Tim Tate has stepped up to try his hand at editing, and we appreciate that. Don Shumaker will be overseeing and helping with this. Tim Tate’s intelligence and willingness to help is a true asset to the VTA, and I think we all know what Don Shumaker brings to the table, his abilities to write and knowledge of trapping is second to none. I cant wait to see what they put together for us in the Fall.

We also inducted some new guys to our Hall of Fame. It was an honor to hand these individuals their plaques. The new inductees are Roy Wood, Blaine Foltz, Frances Richards, Ward Burton, and Ed Crebbs. These guys have dedicated a lifetime of service to the VTA. Art Foltz received the Presidents award, Scott Painter received Trapper of the Year, Todd Cocker received Volunteer of the Year, Larry King A.K.A. Big Daddy received Director of the Year, and Glen Mabe and the Va. Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries received the Honorary Lifetime award. We also handed out about forty certificates of appreciation. All I can say is this bunch of guys and gals were all well deserving of their awards. Thank you all.

I would like to thank all the people who did demos and thanks to Tom Tyree for getting those guys to travel so far. Tom has also done an outstanding job with keeping N.A.F.A. one of our largest supporters.

As you know election time is here and I have decided to run for another term as President. It has been a pleasure and honor to serve as your president. Make sure when you get your ballot, vote for who you think will do the best job.

— Steve E. Colvin

DISTRICT 4 REPORT

The VTA held its convention on July 15-17 in Orange, Va. The weather was great.

Vendors and tailgaters had all the supplies, new traps, old traps, and tools needed on the trapline.

The demos were well done and informative.

We had great food and a Bluegrass Band.

If anyone would like to have a meeting or get together this fall please call me.

I will schedule meetings after trapping season.

Any questions or comments please call me. 540-886-8014.

— Bill Price

DISTRICT 8 REPORT

Hopefully, most of you had a good time at the VTA Convention and took advantage of the vendors and demo providers to stock up on supplies and advise. Being the first convention I’ve had a part in coordinating it wasn’t as painful getting everything ready as I imagined.

However, since the site was in his back yard, our President, Steve Colvin did a lot of the leg work obtaining advertisers, scheduling the band, renting tables/chairs/snow cones and cotton candy equipment to name a few of the tasks he performed. Special thanks also go to Tom Tyree for coordinating demo providers and Francis Richards for lining up the vendors. My biggest concern was daily operations and I thank the few that stepped up to relieve me from gate duty and helped me remove trash however, Bob and Jonathan Graham went well beyond the call. Todd Cocker deserves special THANKS for his efforts at the grill and serving tables during both meals.

Our final district meeting of the year is scheduled for September 24 and will be held at the Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Izaak Walton League (IWL). The meeting will be held in conjunction with the IWL Dog Mart. Prior to the Dog Mart events, our district will be holding trapping and fur handling demonstrations. I’ve never attended one of their Dog Marts but it should be an interesting day. If you find yourself in our neck of the woods, plan to attend. If you want additional details regarding IWL events they have an excellent web site or you can call or email me.

It’s hard to believe three years as District Director has slipped by. At our August district meeting we elected a new Director; however the deadline for this article was before the election. Regardless, this being my last district report I have to say I’ve enjoyed the tour, learned a lot, and look forward to being an active district member.
