PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As I sit down to write this article, I realized that by the time you receive your next issue of the T&PC another trapping season is about to start, but in real time it is only the Monday after our fall rendezvous. Here are some the items that we discussed at our business meeting: Steve Phillips graciously volunteered to host the 2009 spring meeting at his home. The tentative date will be the third or fourth Saturday in March depending on the last shipping date for NAFA. The fall convention will be the latter part of September 2009. The exact location has not been selected, but our plans are to find a location where we could do more hands on trapline demonstrations that provide for membership participation. The membership voted for the ATPCA to prepare a bid to try to host the NTA South East Regional Convention in 2010.

At the business meeting on Friday, the membership voted to postpone the election of officers until Saturday before the auction. On Saturday, I was elected your president and Danny Foster was elected recording secretary. In addition, I will be doing part of the Treasurer’s duties with the help of GeorgAnna Flohr who will be processing membership applications. The membership approved this action as an interim measure for the next year because no one would step up to the plate and volunteer to do the treasurer’s job. I don’t plan to rant and rave about this situation, but the future of the ATPCA and trapping depends upon membership involvement. Please do your part by volunteering.

I have been having discussions with officials at the DCNR regarding the current trap tagging requirements in the Code of Alabama. At this time, I believe we have found a sponsor on the House side of the Legislature who will support the proposed change to the tagging requirements, but we still need a sponsor on the Senate side. Please, contact your State Senator and ask him/her if they would be willing to sponsor a bill to change the tagging requirements. I will provide you with the written proposal and discussion points for you to present to your Senator. Time is short the next regularly scheduled session of the Legislature starts in February 2009.

Mike Sievering from the Alabama DCNR has scheduled three Cooperative Trapper Ed classes on Dec. 5-7, 2008 @ Swan Creek WMA, Decatur, AL (Lawrence Co); January 2-4, 2009 @ USDA Fish Farm Center, Greensboro, AL (Hale Co) and Feb. 13-15, 2009, Location TBA, Greeneville, AL (Butler Co). He would like to develop a core group of ATPCA members in each geographical area to act as mentors. Any adult that has helped with a youth program knows that he take away as much if not more from the event as the participants. Please take some time out of your busy schedule and volunteer. Call Mike at (205) 339-5716.

In closing I want to take this opportunity to thank the following individuals for their continuous support of the ATPCA and trapping not only at convention time, but through the year: Mike & GeorgAnna Flohr, Bob & Paula Crane, Jackie Malone, Mike Sievering, Steve Phillips and Danny Foster. Thanks guys. — Charlie Rath
