I do not want to speak too soon and jinx the weather. I think that the HOT weather has finally left for the year. It has been rather cool and the rain has started. We could have used it earlier, but we will take what we can get.
The weather for our convention was just about perfect. It started everyone to think about trapping instead of going to the beach to cool off.
Speaking of the convention, I believe it was a success. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. The attendance was rather good even due to price of gas and the way the economy is.
We had our annual meeting and it was well attended. We found that the animal damage control rule changes have been put on hold, possibly until next spring. There is a back lash from enforcement due to there not being enough officers to enforce this rule change. There also seems to be a problem with the online course that is required for obtaining the license. The trapping reciprocity is to be for U.S. residents only. There is a court case going on in Wisconsin about non-residents not being allowed to trap on federal lands. Sounds like this is going to be put on hold until the outcome of the court case.
There was an election of officers and directors if you want to call it that. Everyone ran unopposed so they all retained their offices. The secretary and president and the 3 directors stayed the same.
We had our annual awards presentation during the meeting and one award was given out during the convention on Friday afternoon. The Trapper of the Year was presented to Walt Smith and the President’s Award was presented to “Wild” Bill Bennett. The Mark Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Ed Gage. These awards were presented to those individuals who truly deserved them for their contributions to trapping and to the organization.
We had our Adopt-A-Highway Pickup and 8 people were there to pick up the trash off the edge of the highway.
We also have a new Lifetime member, Ed Lundborg. Thanks Ed for your confidence.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to our convention either by attending or by their contributions towards our various drawings and silent auction.
We also voted on to have our Annual Trapper’s Dinner in February. The date and time will be given at a later date, after it is set with Rudyard Township.
It was also decide that we continue to send the Fur-Fish-Game magazine to the 21 school libraries that we have been sending the magazine to.
The next meeting will be October 17th at the Lutheran Church in Rudyard at 7:30pm.
So you can put all the meeting dates on your calendar for next year they are as follows:
October 17 Lutheran Church, Rudyard, 7:30 pm; Jan 16, 2013 Northland Sportsmans Club, Gaylord, 7:30 pm; March 20, 2013 Lutheran Church, Rudyard, 7:30 pm; May 15, 2013 Northland Sportsmans Club, Gaylord 7:30 pm; July 17, 2013 Lutheran Church, Rudyard 7:30 pm, NGLFH Annual convention Sept. 20-21, 2013 Chippewa Co. Fairgrounds, Kinross; annual meeting will be Fri Night 7:30 pm at the convention in the 4-H building. — Jim Neitling
