Muskrat Gets Too Close to Dam

Submitted by Corey Graff, Online Editor

On a half-frozen mill pond near my home in Central Wisconsin, I spotted this friendly little muskrat basking on an ice shelf. As I began to shoot photos of the ‘rat, I realized it could easily be approached and even allowed me to conduct a swell photo shoot up close. After dipping into the water for a swim — much to my delight coming straight for me — it turned and swam dangerously close to the edge of the dam. The current grabbed ahold and the ‘rat began to paddle its tail off (so to speak) to keep from going over the edge. Finally making it through the current’s pull, just barely, and after getting back to the ice shelf, the wet ‘rat gave me one final peek over its shoulder before jumping in again, disappearing under the frozen pond.
