PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Greetings members,

By the time that you read this newsletter, our fall Convention has come and gone. I/we will have a full summary of what has happened at the meeting and where we are going with the association. I know that we had a lot of merchandise donated to our club for the auction and to the youth group for the trappers camp, but we will let you know about that in the next newsletter. We will also have held our election of officers and I look forward to helping our new president make this association better.

This is my last newsletter as President of this association. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work for you, but my job duties make it hard to devote the time required to keep things going. In order to keep things organized for the association, I have had lots of help from many of our officers and directors to set up meetings, coordinate events and just be there to get things done for you. I especially want to thank Vivian Scott and John Weygandt for all the time that they devote to this association and the reminders that they have sent to me to get this or that done. Thank you to Reginald Murray for all the work to keep up the best Web site of all trappers associations. Thank you to Darrell Woodward and Janice Johnson for taking their time to attend the NTA Conventions on our behalf. Thank you to Bill Scherman for his all of his work on the Fur Auctions and his work on the extension of the Fur Bearer Season.

Also, thank you to Leo Farmer, Leon Melton, Terry Waggoner, Jeb Hollingshead, Terry Thornton and others for help at the Fur Sales and meetings. Most of all, I want to thank the ladies, Margie, Edith, Cathy and others that help behind the scene, working in the kitchen, working to help clean up and just keep us trappers on the straight and narrow. There are many more who I did not list, but thanks to you. Your help is what has made this association what it is today.

We just completed the 5th annual Outdoor Expo sponsored by the Wildlife Department. We had a great time and again I feel that our time is well spent educating the general public. The wildlife department estimated that they had around 9,000 school kids, parents and teachers come through on Friday, the first day of the event! Saturday and Sunday were equally as busy and we had a steady flow of people stopping by our exhibit to feel the furs and look at the skulls and traps.

There are thousands of people out there who now know that beavers are not endangered and that we have lots of furbearers around the state. On Friday, Ron and Vivian Scott, Bill and Cecilia Scherman and Terry and Pam Waggoner were there to educate the kids. On Saturday, Terry Waggoner, Janice Johnson, Gene and Cloyce Calloway, TJ Norman, Glenda and Cody Wahl, Matthew Faris and Jonathan Howell worked the booth. Then on Sunday, Terry and Pam Waggoner helped for a third day straight. We also had help from Leo Farmer and his grandson and granddaughter. What a great event, but we couldn’t do it without your help. Thank you for all of your time.

The last two things that I want to remind each one of you about is our upcoming Youth Trapping Camp and the Fur sales. The trappers camp will be held right after Christmas for four days like we did last year. We need help with trapping, skinning and cooking. Even if you can just come for a day, it will be a big help. Please contact John Weygandt if you can help. The Fur Sales, will be held even with the low prices expected on the last weekend of February in Okemah on Feb. 28, 2010 and the first Weekend of March in El Reno on March 6, 2010. More details to come later. Also watch our Web site, , for more information.

Thanks again for the chance to serve as your President for the last couple years. I will always be available to help and will continue to do what I can to further the association and trapping in Oklahoma. Please don’t hesitate to call anytime.

Sincerely.

— Shannon Sheffert
